The term biological filtration refers to the natural process by which nitrifying bacteria detoxify the by-products of nitrogen transformation (nitrogen cycle). A first type of bacteria (Nitrosomonas) converts ammonia into nitrites, a second type of bacteria (Nitrobacter) in turn converts the Nitrites into the less harmful Nitrates. Nitrites are an intermediate by-product, extremely toxic for fish, molluscs and invertebrates since, by affecting the haemoglobin concentration, they reduce the blood's capacity to carry oxygen. High Nitrite concentrations bring fish to a level of chronic stress that causes them disease, loss of appetite, sensitivity to viral and bacterial attacks, to the point of leading them to death. While a Nitrite level of 0.1 mg/lt is considered the limit for many types of ornamental fish (some fish tolerate levels of 0.5 mg/lt), if our aquarium is populated by corals and invertebrates, values above 0.05 mg/lt are already to be considered intolerable. If the nitrogen oxidation process carried out by the bacteria is somehow hindered, for example after the installation of new filters, a considerable increase in the Nitrite concentration can occur, reaching dangerous levels. For this reason the regular use of the Nitrite test is very important.
